Rants about hockey (chiefly the Carolina Hurricanes) from an Adopted Southerner. Occasionally I also talk about cooking.

I have my 88-89 Panini sticker album almost completely full. Anyone got a foil sabre to trade for a foil flame?

I grew up as a fan of the Edmonton Oilers--they were the first team I ever saw play, during their first season in the NHL, so I decided to follow them. It wasn't easy, considering where and when I grew up (North Dakota in the 80s--I was lucky to get box scores in the paper, and the only reason I watched games was because my grandmother had cable and we didn't).

I never really gave a damn about the North Stars or the Jets (the teams nearest where I lived), so eh. The Whalers were always my second favourite team, partly because I liked their colours (and still do), partly because they were always the first page that got filled up in my Panini sticker albums, and mostly because they were just so likeable really.

Who was the team you grew up with? It was meant as a fair question. I am sure people started liking the canes after thier Stanley Cup victory.

And Nic, I have always felt you should like your home town team no matter what, what possible reason could someone from Boston have to becoming a blackhawks fan for example. If you are from Boston and you move to Chicago, you should stay a Bruins/Celtics, Sox/ Pats fan. If your home town does not have a team, then you can choose one. I was just confused, because at first glance you would not think Carolina to be a hockey hot bed, thats all.

Now now, I'll take it as a fair question and answer it in a nutshell:

It's complicated, but let me sum up:

"You can't compete with somebody who's there."

Or rather, the team I grew up with really didn't need my faraway support--so I decided to promote my second-favourite team (the Whalercanes) to the top spot.

C'mon Herb, I hope that wasn't a shot at the Canes and marketing. In this day and age, anyone, anywhere can become a fan of anybody.

I've lived in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska my whole life and have been a Pens fan since I was 5. No actual connection to the Pens caused it, it was by choice, and I've stuck by it.

I'm sure Acid Queen has her own reasons.

Just wondering how someone becomes a Carolina fan? Were you a whalers fan and moved to Raleigh to follow your team or what?
