The More Things Change…

Well it happened again, the Canes draft someone out of the “Plymouth Pipeline” that has churned out “great” players for us such as Jonas Fiedler, Jared Newman, Damian Surma and Kevin Holdridge. In fact since the Canes have moved to NC they have made Plymouth Whalers 14 of their 114 selections. Combined all these picks have a grand total of 45 NHL games played, a rate of just over 3 games per player. Yet the Canes keep coming back to the organization in the draft despite this, and this is mostly the doing of Karmanos. Why am I getting at this? Because they just used their 4th round pick on yet another Whaler, Michal Jordan, this past weekend in Ottawa. Now the name itself is an epic win and maybe I shouldn’t be too hard on the Plymouth Pipeline since we had not even tapped it since a round that doesn’t even exist anymore in 2004 until last year, taking both Chris Terry and Bret Bellemore, who both look pretty good as prospects right now. But I really do have to wonder if there’s another organization in the league that has used more then 10% of their draft picks on one junior team with such an incredible record of failure.

Now don’t get me wrong, they found a gem that passed through the draft a few times in Chad LaRose, who signed with the Canes after finishing his junior career in Plymouth. LaRose has played over twice as many games as the Canes 14 Plymouth picks put together and it’s likely he would have gone unsigned had he played for any other team. LaRose has become one of a few notable Whalers in the NHL right now, which include David Legwand, Bryan Berard, Justin Williams, Stephen Weiss and Paul Mara. But all of those players have one thing in common; they weren’t drafted by the Canes.

But the biggest reason for this rant has nothing to do with Jordan, who may yet prove to be a decent pickup if his performance at last years World Juniors is any indication. No, it has to do with something far more underhanded: the way PK does his business, specifically as it relates to the relationship between the Hurricanes, the Plymouth Whalers and our recently drafted RW/C prospect Zac Dalpe. Now, Dalpe falling to the Hurricanes at #45 was possibly one of the biggest surprises of the entire draft, really he probably should have gone in the first round and there’s absolutely no way he should have fallen to the middle of the second. Every single publication had him as a late first and the Hurricanes had him at #16 on their list, that’s the type of thing, like Paul Stastny falling in 05, that has the potential to make at least 20 other teams look like total idiots somewhere down the line.

If you’re asking yourself why this is a bad thing, for the Canes it’s not, but for Zac Dalpe it might as well be the kiss of death. You see, he was drafted by the Plymouth Whalers in the 2nd round of the OHL Priority Draft. The big deal with that is the OHL Priority Draft was for ‘92 born players this year, Dalpe is an ‘89, so when a team uses a 2nd rounder on a guy like that who has already committed to college you know they’re going to do absolutely everything in their power to get the guy to change his mind and go the Major Junior route. Now that he’s Hurricanes property he’s going to be getting the full court press from every direction, Stefan in Plymouth, JR, PK, I wouldn’t be shocked if even Ronnie himself were pushing for him to forget OSU and go to Plymouth. Still, nothing has changed for Dalpe, and he has even stated as much. That won’t stop the Canes from putting the pressure on Dalpe though. Plymouth should have a good team next year and Dalpe could be a key player for them, likely being their top center if he signs.

You have to give Dalpe credit for being a man of his word, and just as much you have to wonder about the conflict of interests that exist between the Plymouth Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes. Karmanos remains the only owner of an NHL team that also owns a Major Junior one, and while the Plymouth Whalers aren’t a farm team for the Canes as that is prohibited, it sure seems that the organization acts like they are one. And while Plymouth is by no means an NHL prospect factory, Ohio State isn’t exactly lighting up the NHL ranks either with their most notable alumni in the league being a tossup between Ryan Kesler and R.J. Umberger, not exactly a ringing endorsement of the program. I mean we’re not exactly talking about trying to snag a kid from Minnesota, Denver or even St. Cloud State here. But the fact of the matter is that the pressure is on from both parts of the Karmanos camp, despite the fact that Dalpe has stated that he has no intentions of playing for someone other then OSU next season.

I will say that OSU’s coach, John Markell, is doing himself no favors with some of the comments he’s been making to the press over the issue. According to him: “They’re the only team in the league that does that. Most NHL teams wouldn’t do that, but they’ve chosen to do it.” Well, unless he’s talking running a junior team simultaneously, odds are he’s off base with that. I mean, I guess there was absolutely no pressure from the Isles to get Okposo to leave Minnesota in the middle of the season right after the WJC’s. And I’m sure that none of the other players that jumped from the NCAAs to Major Juniors had any pressure from the team that drafted them to do so. Not to mention that when Ronnie met with McBain this past year Francis was one of the people encouraging McBain to go back for his junior year. I can respect where Markell is coming from, but when he says stuff like that it seems disingenuous at best.

Obviously both sides are concerned about what they feel is best for their player, but frankly that is the kind of thing that is up for Zac and Zac alone to decide.

Gleason signs; Caniac Nation erupts in spontaneous rejoicing

Gleason signed for 4 years. Hurricanes also trade for rights to tough guy Darcy Hordichuk — LSB

There is still much work to be done on this team, if manglement expects to be able to compete this coming season–but the signing is a positive sign.

Can You Spell “Overrated”, Boys and Girls?

Way to be, toolbag. (850 The Buzz blog, comments)

To sum up: A fan went into a thread that should have been about applauding Glen Wesley, and decided to crap all over it by talking about how his boy Bret of the Gimpy Hip was the real loss to our defence.

I quote one of this clown’s “gems”:

A healthy Hedican was the backbone of both the 02 and 06 Stanley Cup runs. No healthy Hedican, no playoffs!

Excuse me, what? Nevermind that the Hurricanes were going to make the playoffs anyway both seasons, and that the Hurricanes were already running away with the Southeast as of February 2002 (when Gimpy came to the Hurricanes). And let’s just forget about the Season From Hell, where Gimpy was healthy–and we finished dead freakin’ last.

And plus-minus? Yes, that is a real sure-fire indicator that a defenceman is good–Marek Malik shoulda won the Norris Trophy in 2004, if a high plus-minus means that you’re great. +35? BEST DEFENCEMAN EVER, CLEARLY. A++++ HALLOFAME PLAYER WOULD SIGN AGAIN.

*snort*

Give me a break, Hedi-homers. I liked the guy, sure. Yes, a good plus-minus is a strong indicator of a defenceman’s tendencies–but I remember how craptacularly Marek Malik was treated by a lot of the “fans” here, and how he got blamed for everything from the price of tea in China to the Armenian Genocide…now suddenly a guy who made more defensive gaffes and brainfarts than I’ve ever seen Harry make is the Second Coming. Do what?

The backbone of our two Finals runs and one Cup win? What are you idiots smoking, and where can I get in on some of that action? Seriously, I’m asking here. I credit Ron Francis’ leadership for 2002, and Cam Ward’s amazing Drydenesque play in goal for 2006–and Aaron Ward was the backbone of the defence in BOTH those seasons. Gimpy? He was a supporting player. An important cog in the machinery of 2006, of course. But he was a medium-sized cog at best.

Just sayin’.

Finding the next Tselios

So here’s the deal. We all know the off season sucks. For the most part it’s RFA signing this, depth signing that, which in itself isn’t a bad thing. It just usually happens at such a slow pace that it could drive a man to drink. I’d go golfing if it was not “holy hell I think I’m going to spontaneously combust” hot outside since the new champs were crowned. So what does a guy like me do in the meantime? Look forward to the draft of course, which is just a few days away now.

It will be in prime time starting on Friday and will be taking place in Ottawa this year. With gas prices requiring me to sell a kidney to be able to make this trip on short notice I’ll be following at home on Versus. Now a few questions you may be asking yourself: Tyler WHO? He’s undersized but the kid can flat out skate and score. There weren’t very many major junior players that broke the 40 goal mark this year, and Tyler was one of only two available for the draft (Eberle the other) from the defense oriented WHL to break that mark this year. His defensive game is good as well, leaving size the only question mark about this kid.

Why so low on Beach? He has a ton of talent and if anyone from this draft could break into the top 10, it’s him. Some think he has the talent to be the next Bertuzzi, or at worst the next Avery. But he has a history of concussions, disappeared in the WHL playoffs, and has a history of being a total hot head. Simply put I wouldn’t touch him with a 20 foot pole, out of both fear that I might knock him unconcious or that he might take the pole and beat me senseless with it. He’s my “bust of the year”, joining the likes of Angelo Esposito and Anthony Stewart.

Why so low on Myers? He’s a total project. The two biggest assets he has going for him are his size and his skating ability. That alone will give him a chance to make it to the NHL level, but when people talk about his untapped potential I’m just not seeing it. He could develop his offensive game and improve his defensive zone coverage but, with the way free agency is now and with how big defensemen usually take longer to develop, is he really worth using an early first rounder on only to have his game come around the year before he hits UFA status?

Who should the Canes draft? I really do get a laugh out of it every time I see it. People that think that because the Canes have a current need on defense that they should draft a defenseman. WRONG. That’s a current need, that’s what free agency and the trade market are for, this is the NHL not the NFL, you don’t draft for what you currently need. We have quite a few good defensive prospects like Borer, McBain, Lawson and Carson, the depth up front isn’t looking quite as good right now. Now, we could use a defenseman or two this year, yes, but unless one of the top end defensemen (Doughty, Bogosian, Schenn, Pietrangelo) drops to #14 somehow JR should be looking at picking a forward.

An Army Navy of Two

I’d like to welcome DaveG as my partner in blog. Dave’s been a fan of the Hurricanes since the Hartford days (along with the Penguins), and is a regular poster on hfboards.com where he’s the Hurricanes board’s resident Amateur Draft Guru. He serves up commentary with a healthy side of sarcasm (and a little less gonzo than yours truly), and I’m delighted to have him on board.

Draft preview coming. Be afraid, be very afraid.

We Can Has Backup?

Hurricanes ink Michael Leighton to 2 year deal — ch.com

Thank the gods for that, too. This will give us some stability in goal, which will help immensely. I just hope that they don’t suddenly decide to start fighting again.

In other news: Salaries are higher now than they were pre-Ragnarok. WTF?  Frakkin’ hell people, why did we have a lockout in the first freakin’ place?

Job Swap ftw? (and a scouting rant)

Daniels, Rowe swap positions — LSB

Press release — ch.com

This should be interesting–though really I am more interested to see how Jake does in Albany than I am to see how TRowe does here in R’lyeh.

And as an aside, OG Whalercane Robert Kron was hired by the Hurricanes as the team’s European scout. It’s not that I mind this, but even with this hiring we only have a scouting staff of 10. Even the Avalanche, who have possibly the most weak-sauce farm system in the League, have more than the Hurricanes. Only three more, but they still have more–three of whom are in Europe.

But that, my friends, is a rant for another day. Or later today. I haven’t decided yet.

no good deed goes unpunished (and alumni nights)

I write a post congratulating the Red Wings on winning the Cup. I was–so I thought, anyway–quite complimentary, laudatory even. I went out of my way to praise them, even. The Chief links it, showing the contrast between my post and the rather venomous screeds that were posted by a few Avs and Blues fans.

As you see from the comments, I wound up getting blasted by some of the Chief’s regulars anyway.

*facepalm*

That’s what I get for trying to show a modicum of good sportsmanship, I guess.

(I had some less-complimentary things I was going to say as part of the above, but I decided to follow the example set by–of all people–the Red Wings’ current and previous Captains and stay classy)

Moving on:

A guy on X Random Messageboard seriously suggested that Bret of the Gimpy Hip’s jersey be retired…only to immediately backtrack and say “I was really just stirring the pot” after being challenged by a couple people. Of course you were just stirring the pot, dude–that’s why, when you were originally challenged, you said “Oh, I want to see him recognized for all he’s done for the team”.

Dude, srsly. Give Gimpy a nice gift when he comes back with whatever team he signs with in the offseason or something–that’s what the Hurricanes that made it through the Greensboro years all got together and did for Kevin Dineen. Have an alumni night some years from now where our first Cup team gets recognized (perhaps when the Warchief’s jersey gets retired). But retiring his jersey? Hell no. No way has he done anything to warrant that.

Just being “a leader” is not enough. Just winning a Cup is not enough. Getting a jersey retired is and should be a singular and rare honour that is given only to those people whose career with the team stands out far above anyone else’s. It’s why I don’t think Ray Bourque’s jersey should have been retired by Colorado. Yes, he won a Cup with them–but he was there for a season and a freaking half. He totally deserved having his jersey retired by the Bruins…but the Avs? That was a freakin’ joke right there.

Just sayin’, of course.

Two Carolina Originals

This week saw the retirement of the last two Original Whalercanes in the NHL.

Sami Kapanen announced his retirement from the NHL amid precious little fanfare, and is going back to Finland to play his last few years with KalPa Kuopio, the team that he has a majority ownership stake in (and that he played for before being drafted into the NHL). Perhaps best-remembered here for winning the Fastest Skater title in each of his All-Star appearances (2000 and 2002), Sami is best-remembered by the rest of the NHL for taking a nasty hit from behind by Leafs dirty cheap-ass piece of crappest-slash- cheapshot-artistagitator Darcy Tucker in the 2004 playoffs, and fighting his way back to the bench.

Sami also had the assist on The Goal That Saved The Team’s Ass (The Warchief’s Game 4 OT game-winner) in the 2001 playoffs. A lot of people blasted Sami here because he didn’t score 293872498724 goals. I, however, will never say anything bad about the man that helped turn this team away from what would surely have been a most ignominious demise.

Glen Wesley announced his retirement yesterday that also served to announce his hiring as Director of Defenceman Development. Everything that can be said about #2 would take many long days to retell, so I will spare you the thousand words and leave you with a picture that sums it all up:

Thanks for the memories, Glen. It’s been an honour and a privilege to watch you play.

And now you see that Evil will always triumph because GOOD is DUMB.

(Note: I wrote this as Game 5 was winding down. I present it now, with minor changes.)

And the Malik Effect claims another victim. Congratulations, Red Wings.

As much as I hate that team, as much as I think that their fans are (with a few exceptions–three of whom are bloggers) a bunch of drooling moronic n00blets with no class who know exactly dick-all about hockey, as much as I was hoping for them to get pwned a la 1995, I must speak truth here:

They–the Red Wings–are consummate professionals, and in these Finals they gave a clinic in how to completely and totally dismantle a team that had become–and let us be honest here–a disorganized gang that at times in this series could barely find their own nutsacks with a flashlight and a sat-nav unit. I must applaud that.

Anyone who is a fan of the sport must, in my opinion, rise above their hatred and applaud the skill and professionalism shown by the Red Wings. Valour of course doesn’t enter into this equation, not this time–they didn’t have a captain who willed himself to play on one functional leg. They didn’t have to overcome any great adversity or even have to battle back from being on the ropes. They were simply given a task, and like the band of trained assassins that they are the Red Wings terminated their target with extreme prejudice.

I must raise a glass to that. As a fan of hockey, as an admirer of individual skill, I must salute that. I must admire that.

I never said I had to like it, of course. But I must–and I do–respect it.

I must also raise a glass to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who could have rolled over and died. No lie kids, they really looked like they were going to shrivel on the vine much as the Senators did last season. But they didn’t. And do not let my satirical e-mail to NHL Live earlier today fool you–I was cheering for the Pens, and foolishly thought that I’d be able to make a “prediction” and have it fall flat to force a seventh game. I was hoping that that triple-overtime deflation would take the wind out of the Red Wings’ sails and propel the Penguins on to an eventual win.

Sadly, I was the one disappointed. Congratulations, Red Wings.

Thank you, and good night.

Srs Bzns

It’s been reported in LSB (by way of the National Post) that Canadian gazillionaire Jim Balsillie was (according to his people) approached by eight US-based NHL teams about a possible sale. The writer of the article, one Theresa Tedesco, made a point of mentioning that four of those teams were based in the southern US (and three of those markets–Carolina, Atlanta, and Tampa–happen to be in the SE Division), in conjunction with the words “weak hockey markets”.

Atlanta, eh. That town has ALWAYS been a slack sports town. Even when the Braves were the NL West/East/Whatever Champs for like 12839071298312476 seasons in a row, they never filled Fulton County Stadium (or its successor, Turner Field). Even when the Falcons were good (for all of like five minutes), the GeorgiaDome never got full. That said: Hockey has always been a draw in Atlanta–the Flames, had their original owner not been forced to sell them by the collapse of the real-estate market (and had the only buyer not been from Calgary), would likely still be in Atlanta and they would still be drawing modestly. That said, playing like ass does tend to keep fans away.

Tampa, though…Not really thrilled, here. Tampa’s had terrific attendance figures since the season they won the Cup, and they are a strong sports market and have been for years–hells, look at the Bucs. They were pathetic for years, and people still went to games. The market is not weak here, kids.

Which brings us to the Hurricanes. We’re not Detroit, but our economy here in the sports-crazy Triangle sucks ass and is preventing people like me from buying tickets too–of course, since we’re not Detroit we’re not allowed to use that excuse and we just have to take sidelong jabs from fans (and the occasional mediot) about us not being a hockey market. Even so, I don’t think that the Hurricanes present a very tempting target for Balsillie because really, they’re not struggling that much. The guy is going to want a team that’s seriously on the rocks because he feels that he can move it with impunity and little backlash.

Whatever happens, fans of whichever team this man latches his claws onto should prepare for that team’s imminent departure.

Hockey: It’s teh srs bzns.

Wednesday Woo

My current gaming obsession is EVE Online, so here is another EVE video–because I’d rather not think about a certain cerebrally-challenged band of idiots getting any kind of satisfaction tonight.

This bad boy is a trailer for the game. It really is a stunning, beautiful game.

Here’s a combat video set to “Furious Angels” by Rob Dougan:

And finally, a link to my corp’s website, with a recruitment vid on the frontpage.

Man this is a beautiful game.

Pardon me gentlemen, how do you like those apples?

Well what can I say?

There I was, all set to make this big congratulatory post (because, fool that I am, I promised I would). My WoW guildies, most of whom are fans of the Unspeakables (much to my chagrin), were spooging themselves over another five-game Cup win, and I had my mom’s number blocked.

Oh wait, I had Mom’s number blocked anyway–she’s a Celtics fan (and I am a Lakers fan).

And then, with thirty seconds left, Maxime Talbot ties the game. I settled in to watch overtime, preparing to edit my post about The Malik Effect being stronger than The Curse of the Euro Captain so I could finish getting my promised congratulations posted and go commit seppuku and have my soul dragged off to The Hell of 2:34 AM by Igor frakkin’ Larionov.

First OT gone. No score. Second OT gone. No score. The Red Wings bombarded the Penguins’ net, and Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside every shot that managed to get through a stifling Penguins’ defence. The Penguins couldn’t get a shot off for the life of them. Evgeni Malkin, bless his dear heart, tried. He tried so hard, but he just couldn’t get it done. Marian Hossa charged the net like a doughboy charging the guns of Gallipolli, but he couldn’t get through. I tuned out the talking heads on NBC, because Bob Neumeier has no business talking about hockey and Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury have CRAFTSMAN stamped on their foreheads. Then I heard it:

Petr Sykora called his shot.

My husband heard it too–he said, “Did that guy just do a Babe Ruth?”

Mind you, Sykora didn’t point to a spot out in right field or anything, but he may as well have. “Yes,” I said. “I do believe that he did.”

The third OT started, and I said “there is no way in the Nine Worlds that I am going to be anything but a freaking zombie on the bus in the morning.”

Finally, at 12:46AM (or thereabouts–I was tired and punchy and didn’t notice), Petr Sykora hit his promised homer out of the park and there will be a Game 6.

I get a perverse sense of satisfaction out of that.

Mondistractions

In an attempt to distract myself from the annoyance that will be tonight’s game, I went meandering around to find cool and amusing things.

Courtesy of Gizmodo, a YouTube video of a guy who hacked his Roomba into PacMan:

For those of you who are EVE Online players (like me), a video of GoonSwarm’s legendary Titan kill from last June (Titans are the biggest ships in the game, take three months to build, and you would have to sell about 10,000 USD worth of EVE time codes in-game to get the ISK necessary for the materials to build and outfit the thing):

There is a reason why their alliance’s tag is OHGOD, folks. And no, I will not tell any of you who my characters are. So there.

I’m sure that we’ve all seen it by now, but here’s possibly my most favourite legendary WoW video of all time:

(btw, for those who don’t know–this is possibly the easiest encounter in Upper Blackrock Spire, and yes the video was obviously staged. It was done for amusement.)

And finally, a link to SI.com’s Don Cherry Photo Gallery. Lookin’ sharp as always, Grapes.

Puck drops tonight at 8 PM. The Pens will either live to fight another day, or Evil will triumph at the conclusion of what’s been the most boring-ass playoffs of the last 15 years. Either way, I’ll be watching.
